Letter from Kaela
Dear Neighbor,
Congratulations on your election as a Delegate! Thank you for stepping up to represent your neighbors, friends and peers as a part of this important part of our democratic process. I’m writing today to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my vision for our collective future. I hope I can earn your support at the convention.
My name is Kaela Berg, I’m a three term State Representative, mom, a lifelong Minnesotan, labor leader and proud union member. I’m running for Congress because working people deserve a champion in Congress who shares their lived experience, and who has spent their life and career fighting to make real change for all workers.
Multimillionaires in Congress have been especially appalling in Trump’s destructive second term. They’ve cut health care for 10 million people to give the wealthy a tax cut. They’ve worked to maximize corporate profits even as these same corporations raise prices on everything we need to live. And this isn’t a one-off, it is the whole point. These self-dealing politicians are taking the cost increases hitting working families, and are enriching themselves with stock trades. They’re taking our hard-earned money and putting it right in their own pockets. It’s time we get dark money out of politics. That’s why I will never take corporate PAC money and ban congressional stock trading.
I actually live a working-class life. I worked up to three jobs to put dinner on the table for my kids. I still live in an affordable one bedroom apartment despite working two jobs, and I’ve gone without health insurance as a frontline employee during a global pandemic. As your next member of Congress, I’ll never put my bottom line before yours because I understand how hard you work for it.
That’s also why I’ll work every day to lower the cost of your groceries, health care, housing, and utilities. I’ll fix our broken tax code so that billionaires are paying their fair share just like the rest of us. But my work won’t stop at fixing an economy that’s rigged for the wealthy and their politician cronies, because right now that just isn’t enough.
ICE has occupied our cities and terrorized our friends and neighbors. They are racially profiling us, snatching teachers from schools, detaining a five year old in a Spiderman backpack, tear gassing a six month old, and taking away our civil liberties at every turn. When I get to Congress, I’ll make sure ICE doesn’t get another penny and that these agents are brought to justice.
Between the fear and instability the Trump Administration is causing and the climbing cost of living, it is impossible for Minnesotans to build a life and legacy with economic opportunity for generations to come, much less make ends meet in the short term. I hope to earn your support at the Convention, but regardless, I thank you for your consideration and for your participation in our democracy.
In solidarity,
Kaela
